Divorce on the decline

When couples in Illinois get married divorce statistics are probably the last things on their minds. Still, many experts believe that marriages have roughly a 50 percent chance of succeeding although recent studies show that actual divorce numbers are declining.

In fact, in 2015 the United States divorce rate reached a 35-year low. It is not clear, however, why this should be. Researchers have offered some possible explanations, including the fact that many people simply are not getting married anymore and either remain single or choose to live together in domestic partnerships.

There are also geographical factors in the number of marriages that take place in a given area. For example, Utah has a very high marriage rate, but it also has a higher divorce rate than states with a lower marriage rate. This is perhaps to be expected, however, given that there are more marriages in Utah that can end in divorce.

The decline in divorce numbers may be reassuring to some recently engaged and newlywed couples. However, given the fact that there is no strong explanation for the decline, it is important for people to realize that some marriages can and do end, even when a couple enters into a marriage with high hopes and good intentions.

Individuals who are considering divorce may benefit from speaking with a family law attorney. The attorney may be able to provide advice regarding things like property division, child custody and support issues. In addition, individuals who are already divorced from their spouses but are unhappy with their divorce settlement may also be able to investigate post-divorce modifications.
