Beloit domestic dispute ended only by SWAT and negotiators

Domestic problems can quickly spiral out of control. Arguments can rage and become physical in the blink of an eye. Domestic violence, when it occurs, can place men, women, and children at risk of serious harm. If emotional or physical abuse goes unchecked for too long, the risk can become a scary reality.

A Beloit family recently fell victim to domestic violence when a son threatened his parents with a weapon. Barricading himself in the house, the man continued to threaten his parents while other children were in the house. Police called in hostage negotiators and the SWAT team, who were able to convince the man to release the children and surrender after a three hour standoff. The man was subsequently charged with domestic violence while armed, reckless endangerment, and resisting arrest. This family may be forever traumatized by the experience.

While not all domestic violence may seem this extreme, it can be just as dangerous. An argument can lead to a fist fight or being hit with an object. Additionally, the abuse may be ongoing, placing the victim at risk of continued harm to herself and her children. Therefore, when the first sign of abuse arises, the victim should call 9-1-1, and then seek legal assistance.

A Rockford family law attorney can help an individual understand what is necessary to obtain a restraining order and how to ensure it is enforced. Also, the attorney can file appropriate paperwork in a timely fashion to allow the process to proceed smoothly and he can also argue in front of a judge in an attempt to persuade him a protection order is necessary for the safety of children and the petitioner. If necessary, the attorney will suggest obtaining a plenary order of protection, which will provide long-term protection. Then, the party and her children can relax and know they will no longer be subject to domestic abuse.
