More and more marriages in Illinois are ending in divorce. There are many reasons for the increase, but despite the numbers going up, divorces can still be very complicated. Emotions generally run high during a divorce and can cloud a reasonable person’s judgment. Many times the couple no longer sees a reason to cooperate and just wants what they think they deserve. There are many issues that need to be resolved in a divorce, and, therefore, there can also be many disputes.
Actor and director Clint Eastwood is finding that out now as he is going through a divorce. Eastwood’s wife recently filed for divorce after 17 years of marriage and is seeking spousal support and full custody of their 17-year-old child. Eastwood responded by filing legal documents denying her request for spousal support. He also is seeking to have joint custody of their child.
Spousal support and child custody are just a couple of the issues that need to resolved when getting divorced. Couples also need to deal with property division, which can be very complicated especially in a high asset divorce like the Eastwood’s. Couples need to determine what to do with houses and other real property and must also decide how to divide bank accounts, retirement accounts and debts that the couple owes.
Other issues regarding the children must be resolved as well. Parenting time schedules must be established and child support must be determined.
As more and more couples obtain divorces in Illinois, more and more people will have to deal with these issues. An attorney can help couples understand the issues that may arise throughout a divorce and may be a helpful resource as the couple works through the process.
