Many NFL fans in Illinois may be aware that the Indianapolis Colts owner, Jim Irsay, was charged and convicted of driving under the influence this past summer. There were many pills found in his car as well as $29,000 in cash. Well apparently that incident caused him to become involved in his daughter's child custody case.
Illinois residents who are fans of the popular television show "The View" may know that Sherri Shepherd is having a child via surrogacy. They may also know that she is no longer with the father. The surrogate is due to give birth to the child, but the couple is currently going through a divorce and they have not determined who will have custody of the child. Shepherd's husband is seeking sole legal and physical custody of the child, and Shepherd's position is not known.
In Illinois, more and more people are ending heterosexual marriages and relationships and entering into same-sex relationships. There are also many others who have been in long-term same-sex relationships, without being able to marry and have children together. As this becomes more common and, especially, as same-sex couples are now able to legally marry in Illinois, child custody disputes involving LBGT individuals will become more and more common.
Many Illinois parents have split up and, as a result, must deal with visitation schedules for their children. These schedules typically are a part of child custody orders. It is fairly common in Illinois for one parent to receive more time with the children than the other parent; generally, the parent receiving more time is the mother. Many fathers, though, would like to have more time with their children and in some situations, it may be beneficial for children to spend more time with the non-custodial parent.
