LGBT parents often times lose child custody battles

In Illinois, more and more people are ending heterosexual marriages and relationships and entering into same-sex relationships. There are also many others who have been in long-term same-sex relationships, without being able to marry and have children together. As this becomes more common and, especially, as same-sex couples are now able to legally marry in Illinois, child custody disputes involving LBGT individuals will become more and more common.

Proposed bill would change visitation rules in Illinois

Many Illinois parents have split up and, as a result, must deal with visitation schedules for their children. These schedules typically are a part of child custody orders. It is fairly common in Illinois for one parent to receive more time with the children than the other parent; generally, the parent receiving more time is the mother. Many fathers, though, would like to have more time with their children and in some situations, it may be beneficial for children to spend more time with the non-custodial parent.

Tyrese's ex denies him custodial parenting time

In Illinois, many parents have custody orders and visitation schedules. These orders determine when each parent will see and care for the child. Most child custody orders indicate who will be picking up the child or dropping off the child. For the most part, these exchanges occur without any problems, even if the parents are not getting along. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, for one reason or another, a parent may not want to give the child to the other parent. When this occurs, a conflict generally arises and the custody order may need to be revisited in court.

During a pending civil case involving the custody or visitation of minor children, a parent must request permission to remove the children to another state before doing so. This means that if the parent is offered a job in another state and they want to take their children with them they must first be granted permission for the removal.

In many divorces, the question of whom will care for the children is a major decision. Child custody determinations can be very contentious, for a variety of reasons. This tends to be the case in situations where both parents show a strong interest in wanting to raise the children. However, even though custody decisions can be contentious, they are also very important.

Child Support Enforcement vs. Child Custody Enforcement

According to Joseph Cordell, founder of DadsDivorce.com, there is a disparity between the child support enforcement and custody enforcement. Cordell argues this disparity tends to show the financial responsibilities of rearing a child is held in higher regard than the emotional connection of a child to a parent. Cordell does make a valid point that a disparity exists in the enforcement of child support orders verses the enforcement of child custody orders.
